BROOKLYN, NY – Purchase women's volleyball picked up the first loss of the 2019 campaign against Brooklyn College Thursday night. The host Bulldogs swept the Panthers in three straight sets, 25-14, 25-11 and 25-14.
Purchase (3-1) came out strong to open the first set. Sophomore outside hitter
Gia Gwin (Yonkers, NY) broke the scoring ice for the Panthers with a kill off the set from
Esmee Johns (FR/Saratoga Springs, NY). A Bulldog error on the next play, pushed the Panthers within one point of Brooklyn's lead (3-2).
The Bulldog's (4-3) answered back with a 14-4 rally before notching seven unanswered points to stretch their lead to 17-6.
Trailing by 11 points, the Panthers fired in five-consecutive points. Despite their valiant effort, the Panthers could not close the gap as the Bulldog's secured the win in the first set, 25-14.
In the second set, Purchase was first to light up the scoreboard. Following a Bulldog attacking error, freshman middle
Samantha Fasce (FR/Yorktown, NY) tallied an ace to push the Panthers out in front, 2-0.
After an exchange of points from both side, Brooklyn's offense ignited with a 14-1 run to take game two, 25-11.
Brooklyn continued its scoring stint in the third set, hitting a match-best .222 as a team en route to the 25-14 victory.
BC's Ashley Fung fueled the charge for the home team with 10 kills, while Ezri Shor tallied 16 assists and 11 digs.
Gwin led the Panther attack with two service aces, while
Skyla Schoppmeyer (SO/Oakdale, NY) and
Joetta Francis (SR/New York, NY) fueled the defense with nine digs and three blocks, respectively.
