PURCHASE, NY – The Purchase women's tennis squad opened up their 2019 home campaign with a battle against non-conference Hunter College on Saturday. Despite a valiant effort, the Panthers dropped the match, 6-3, to the visiting Hawks.
Hunter (2-0) opened up the scoring with a win at third doubles. Mia Slovak and Laura Alvim were tagged with the 8-1 win over Panther rookies
Jade Porter-Fraser (FR/Bronx, NY) and
Sonja Boyko (FR/Babylon, NY). At the No. 2 spot, Elaine Zhang and Ksenia Zevyakina picked up an 8-0 win to stretch the visitor's lead to 2-0.
The Panther duo of
Raquelle DeCicco (JR/Kingston, NY) and
Bianca Harris (SO/Montgomery, NY) broke the scoring ice for Purchase (0-2) with a commanding 8-2 victory at the top flight.
In singles play, the No. 3 matchup was first in line to finish. Zhang recorded her second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Biagiotti.
Trailing 4-2, Purchase rallied to tie the match at four-all with tallies first and second singles. DeCicco secured a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot, followed by Harris' 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the top flight.
Hunter eventually made its comeback, recording wins in the final three singles matches to secure the 6-3 victory.
"With every match and practice this team continues to improve," said head coach
Joseph Binder after the match. "I am optimistic that my players will be successful this season both on and off the court."
The Panthers look to bounce back this Tuesday at home against Baruch College. The non-conference match is slated for 4 p.m.
