JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Purchase College women's soccer team was dealt its first loss of 2019, as the Panthers fell at New Jersey City University Wednesday, 4-0.
With the result, the Panthers dropped to 3-1 overall, while the Gothic Knights of NJCU improved to 6-2.
Despite a valiant effort in goal by
Amber Yarter (SR/Albany, NY), who finished with a season-high 12 saves, New Jersey City's offense overwhelmed Purchase throughout the game. The hosts outshot the Panthers 30-9 overall, 16-6 on goal and found the back of the net four times.
The first came in the eight minute, as Mallensy Vargas (SR/North Bergen, NJ) scored for the Gothic Knights. Despite the early goal, Purchase remained in the contest deep into the first half, before NJCU was able to extend the advantage.
Two quick strikes in the 34th and 35th minute pushed the lead to 3-0 at halftime, before the hosts added a fourth in the 64th minute.
Offensively,
Michelle Gomez (FR/Oceanside, NY) led the Panthers with two shots on goal, while reigning Skyline Conference Player of the Week,
Rebecca Colgan, was limited to just one shot in the loss.
Cidney Lee-Sam (SO/Old Bridge, NJ) collected six saves and the win for the Gothic Knights.
