PURCHASE, NY – The Purchase women's volleyball team opened its 2019 home slate with a victory over York College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18), Wednesday evening.
With the season-opening win, the Panthers improve to 1-0 as the Cardinals dip to 1-1.
Purchase was led by sophomore outside hitter
Gia Gwin (Yonkers, NY), who tallied a match-high 10 kills. The standout returner committed just a single error on 21 attempts for an impressive .429 attacking percentage. Freshman setter
Esmee Johns (Saratoga Springs, NY) dished out a match-best 26 assists, while freshman starter
Pamella Gonzalez (FR/Bronx, NY) led the Panther defense with 13 digs.
After strong performances in the opening two sets, Purchase secured the 3-0 shutout with a combined seven service aces in the third set. Sophomore libero
Skyla Schoppmeyer (Oakdale, NY) ignited the run with three consecutive aces, while Gonzalez recorded two and Johns and freshman
Samantha Fasce (FR/Yorktown, NY) tallied one apiece. The Panthers combined for an impressive match total of 18 aces.
York's Alessandra Villota tallied six kills (.188) to lead the Cardinals. Teammate Kiara Gonzalez put up 15 assists for the visitors, while Dorianny Rojas paced the defense with 11 digs.
Purchase is back in action tomorrow as the Panthers travel to Medgar Evers College for a non-conference match slated for 7 p.m.
