PURCHASE, NY - It only took freshman
Andrew Dubron two games to make his mark on the Purchase College men's soccer team, as his goal in overtime Friday night gave the Panthers a 2-1 win over The City College of New York.
Dubron (Centereach, NY) secured the contest by blasting a shot from the left side of the goal box, past the keeper into the lower right of goal in the 93rd minute. The chance was setup by fellow freshman
Ethan Dillon (Poughkeepsie, NY), who sent a long cross in from the right side of the field and found Dubron waiting to pounce on the opportunity.
Following the goal, Dubron and Dillon were mobbed on the field by rushing teammates, as the Panthers (1-1) celebrated the hard-fought victory.
The overtime strike was just the finish Purchase was looking for, as the team outplayed the Beavers (0-3) throughout the night. The Panthers got things started in the 33rd minute, when
Rolando Osguera (SO/Mount Vernon, NY) converted a chance in the box that was made possible by
Colman Cassidy (SO/Brooklyn, NY).
With CCNY in control of the ball deep in the defensive zone, Cassidy played smothering defense and managed to pop the ball away from the Beavers down near the penalty area. As he pushed it away from the defender, Osguera beat everyone else to the ball and was able slide it past the CCNY keeper for a 1-0 advantage.
The score remained 1-0 into halftime and beyond, until Baba Faal (FR/Serrekunda, The Gambia) managed to sneak a volley past Purchase keeper
Mario Olmedo (FR/East Elmhurst, NY) in the 55th minute.
Over the final 35 minutes of regulation, each side created chances but neither could convert. As the two squads battled each other, rain and cold weather throughout the night, it felt inevitable that a winner was looming somewhere.
Luckily for the Panthers, it was Dubron who provided it.
Overall, Purchase outshot CCNY 21-10 and 8-2 on goal. Olmedo finished with a save and the win, while Kacper Lesniak (FR/Nowy Sacz, Poland) tallied six saves.
Up next for the Panthers is another home contest, as the team takes on Lehman College on September 11th at 7 PM. You can follow it here.
