Panthers Pounce on Mount Saint Mary College, 78-70

NEWBURGH, NY - The Purchase College men's basketball team triumphed on the road Saturday afternoon, besting the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College, 78-70, in a Skyline Conference battle.

Purchase is now 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the Skyline, while the Knights dropped to 4-10 and 2-3.

To start, Mount Saint Mary looked like it might cause the guests some trouble, as the hosts jumped out to a 7-0 led just two minutes in. However, the Panthers responded with a vengeance and outscored the Knights, 30-5, over the next ten minutes to grab their biggest lead of the day.

Despite the huge margin though, Mount Saint Mary continued to battle and was able to cut the deficit to single digits (41-33) at the halftime break. The hosts kept up the pressure in the second frame, cutting the lead to just a point at 43-42 with 17 minutes to go. But the Panthers never broke or gave the lead back to the Knights.

Over the next ten minutes the two squads remained in a tight contest, before the Panthers began to slowly pull away once more. It wasn't until Maxx Miller (SR/White Plains, NY) converted a layup with 6:53 remaining that the Panthers led by six or more the rest of the way to seal the win.

On the day, Purchase shot 44.6% from the field but struggled from three-point range (3-for-16). However, Mount Saint Mary had a similar shooting performance, finishing just 36.4% overall and 3-for-19 from deep. A major deciding factor in the victory was Purchase's bench scoring, as the team won the category, 23-9.

Jorge Perdomo (JR/Bronx, NY) powered the Panthers with a team-high 18 points, while Miller added 17 points and seven rebounds.

Elijah Lott (SR/Albany, NY) finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds and three steals. Fellow senior Elijah Harris (Flushing, NY) added 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the win.

For Mount Saint Mary, it was the Kendall Francis (SR/Great Neck, NY) show, as he scored a game-high 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and three steals.

Up next for the men's basketball team will be the start off a three-game homestand, beginning with St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn on January 22nd. That game will begin at 7 p.m. and you can follow along right here.
