PURCHASE, NY – Back-to-back triples from
Dejeana Peoples and a layup by
Alyssa Aurora with less than three minutes remaining in the game gave Purchase College a six-point lead and helped secure a 75-68 win over Yeshiva University Thursday night.
With the win, the Panthers snap a 10-game losing streak and move to 3-15 on the season and 2-11 in Skyline Conference play. In defeat, Yeshiva drops to 5-11 overall and 3-9 in the league.
Purchase opened the game with a three-point bucket from senior guard
Arta Krasniqi (Bronx, NY). On the next Panther possession, sophomore guard
Shadai Plowden (Yonkers, NY) connected in the paint to push the team's lead to 5-0.
Both teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with Purchase coming out ahead, 18-15.
The Panthers would stretch their advantage to eight points (23-15) on a Krasniqi triple in the opening minute of the second quarter, forcing a Maccabee timeout. The result after the break was an 11-1 run by the visitors as they took their first lead of the game, 26-24. Yeshiva stayed hot and closed the second quarter with a 35-34 advantage.
The Purchase offense went 7-of-19 from the field (36.8%) and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc (42.9%) in the third quarter. The Panthers connected on 8-of-10 (80%) free throws, including five in the final two minutes to close the stanza with a comfortable 60-48 lead.
A Yeshiva rally in the final quarter tied the game at 62 with just over four minutes left in regulation time. Peoples (JR/New York, NY) connected from 3-point range to push Purchase back in front but with 2:12 remaining, Yeshiva's Tehilla Teigman hit a jumper inside the paint to close the gap to just a single point (65-64).
Following the play, Panther head coach
Varrell Eddie called a timeout—a call that later proved to be a clutch one.
Peoples and Aurora (SO/Ossining, NY) combined for five points on back-to-back PC possessions which ignited a 10-4 run for the Panthers and a lead they would carry through the final buzzer.
Plowden led the Panthers with 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and two assists. Krasniqi recorded a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 13 boards and three steals. Peoples aided the winning effort with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Up next, Purchase heads to the SUNY College at Old Westbury this Saturday (Feb. 1) for a 12 p.m. Skyline matchup.
