PURCHASE, NY - Purchase College Athletics has been a member of the Skyline Conference since 2007. During that 13-year span, just three members of the women's volleyball team have reached 200 kills in a season.
That's right. Only three. That's how hard and elusive an elite season can be for a volleyball player.
So for today's entry into the weekly #STATurday series, we are focusing on the three individuals that managed to break the mark.
Starting off the list with the third-highest total is
Olivia Hintz '12, who finished the 2009 season with 205 kills.
Hintz (East Aurora, NY) achieved the mark over 31 games played, as she averaged 2.05 kills per set and hit .096 on the year.
Hintz also added impressive kill counts in her other three seasons, totaling 150 in 2008, 120 in 2010 and 139 in 2011. She graduated in 2012 as one of the all-time leaders for kills in Purchase College history.
In second place is
Alicia McCarthy (Plano, TX) with 208 kills back in 2013.
The 208 kill mark is impressive on its own, but how McCarthy compiled the total is arguably more noteworthy. The Texas native managed to achieve the total despite being only a freshman and playing in just 22 matches that year.Â
As a result, she finished with a 2.85 kills per set average and a .209 hitting percentage. With those numbers, McCarthy was named to the All-Skyline Conference First Team and the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year in 2013. She also helped lead the Panthers to the Skyline Conference Playoffs for the first and only time in program history.Â
However, neither McCarthy nor Hintz holds the record for most kills in a season.
That honor instead rests with
Taylor Edelmann '13, who put up a program-record 216 kills during the 2009 campaign.
Edelmann (Bethel, CT), just like Hintz, played in all 31 matches that year and finished with 2.16 kills per set and a .230 hitting percentage in his freshman season.
Edelmann went on to play one more year for the women's team in 2010, before returning to play for the men's team in 2012 and 2013. While Edelmann never again reached the height of his freshman campaign, he did tally 127 kills as a senior to closeout his collegiate career.
Outside of the 2009 campaign, where Edelmann and Hintz both reached the 200 kill mark, only McCarthy four years later has managed to cross it since.
In fact, since the start of the 2014 season, no Panther has gotten more than 156 kills in a season, further emphasizing just how impressive of a feat the trio achieved during their seasons.
While it certainly seems likely that one day more players will enter the 200 kill club, at the moment, only the trio of Olivia Hintz, Alicia McCarthy and Taylor Edelmann are members of the exclusive party.Â
