#STATurday - Jazmin Garcia's Points Per Game Record

PURCHASE, NY - Averaging 20.0 points or more per game for an entire season is tough.

So tough in fact, that only 21 women's basketball players averaged that many points across all of NCAA Division III last season.

In order to achieve that level of scoring over an entire campaign, you need to have a few factors working in your favor.

The first is that you must be a consistent, dominant scorer. Another is playing on a squad that runs a high-octane offense, so scoring chances are created more frequently. Finally, you need the two to gel together to create the opportunities to put up BIG points in a handful of games along the way.

And yet, that was exactly what happened for Jazmin Garcia during the 2013-14 season, as she set the stage for today's entry in the weekly #STATurday series.

During 26 games that year, Garcia (Peekskill, NY) averaged 21.6 points per game, becoming the only Purchase College women's basketball player to ever cross the 20.0 PPG mark during Purchase's 13-year run in the Skyline Conference.

Garcia was able to achieve such a lofty record, thanks in large part to her size (5'11") and her scoring prowess. She finished the year with team-highs in shots taken (447), shots made (203), field-goal percentage (45.4%), free throws made (130) and points scored (562).

Throughout the 26-game run, Garcia led the Panthers in points scored 19 times and recorded least 20 points or more on 16 occasions.

Garcia's ultimate highlight of the season came during the team's regular season finale, as she scored a then program-record 39 points in 77-44 win over St. Joseph's College-Long Island.

The record scoring output one was of three contests in the 2013-14 season, where Garcia poured in 30 points or more. To this day, no other Panther has managed to cross the 20.0 PPG mark at the end of a year.

The closest anyone has gotten was Amber Jones '19 during 2017-18 campaign, as she averaged 19.6 PPG over the 25-game schedule. While Jones was unable to hit the mark, she did manage to set the single-game points record with 42 points in a 97-78 win over the Golden Eagles.

Eventually, as the game of basketball continues to progress and more offensive chances get created each season, another Purchase women's basketball player will cross the 20.0 ppg mark in a single-season.

But even when that does happen someday, the legacy of Jazmin Garcia during the 2013-14 season will endure. Garcia will always stand tall as the first Purchase women to achieve the scoring mark.
