Men's Basketball Defeated at Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, NY - The Purchase College men's basketball team had its three-game winning streak come to an end Tuesday night, as the Panthers fell to Sarah Lawrence College, 89-80, in a Skyline Conference matchup.

With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 15-7 overall and 10-3 in the conference. Despite the defeat, Purchase still controls its destiny when it comes to seeding in the Skyline Conference Championships later this month.

If the Panthers win their final three games, they would lockup the two-seed in the eight team tournament, just behind Yeshiva University, who clinched the one-seed by virtue of the losses by Purchase and Old Westbury Tuesday.

As for the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College, the hosts saw their playoff chances rise with the victory, as the team is now 10-12 overall, 6-7 in the Skyline and tied for sixth in the conference. The win was also the Gryphons' second of the season against the Panthers, as Sarah Lawrence outlasted Purchase in overtime back in January.

To begin Tuesday night, the hosts set the tone early by scoring nine of the first 11 points. Sarah Lawrence carried that advantage until the midway point of the first half, as a 3-pointer from the reigning Skyline Conference Player of the Week, Jorge Perdomo (JR/Bronx, NY), gave the guests their first lead of the night, 20-19.

On the ensuing Purchase possession, Perdomo nailed a pair of free throws with 10:14 left in the frame to give the Panthers their biggest lead of the night at 22-19. The hosts responded with a 13-1 run over the next four minutes to flip the lead back in their favor, 32-23.

Despite the nearly double-digit deficit, the Panthers answered back over the next three minutes, retaking the lead on a 3-pointer by Elijah Lott (SR/Albany, NY), 37-36, with 2:58 left.

Over the final three minutes of action, Sarah Lawrence regained the lead once again and carried a 42-39 edge into the halftime break.

In the second half, the action remained tight throughout. During the 20-minute frame, the Panthers managed to tie the score four separate times (53, 60, 63 and 71-all) but just couldn't get over the hump.

Sarah Lawrence finally put some breathing room between itself and Purchase with the game knotted at 71, as the hosts embarked on a 7-0 run with just three minutes to go. From there, the Gryphons held on and escaped with the hard-fought win.

On the night, Purchase shot 46.8% from the field, while Sarah Lawrence was slightly better at 48.4%. While the Panthers managed to win the rebounding battle (41-34), the other categories they usually dominate were either much closer or went to the Gryphons.

Points off turnovers (26-20) and points in the paint (42-36) both favored Sarah Lawrence, while Purchase barely snuck out an edge in second-chance points (15-13).

Individually, Lott led the Panthers with 21 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Maxx Miller (SR/White Plains, NY) added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Perdomo notched 17 points.

For Sarah Lawrence, Omar Jamaleddine (SO/Middle Village, NY) scored a game-high 24 points and Enike Anyia (JR/ Los Angeles, CA) added 23 points.

Up next for Purchase is another tough conference matchup, as the team hosts Manhattanville College on Feb. 14th. That game will begin at 8 p.m. and you can follow it here.
