Men's Volleyball Topped by Medgar Evers

PURCHASE, NY - The Purchase College men's volleyball team suffered a home loss to Medgar Evers College Tuesday night, falling in straight sets to the non-conference foe.

Set scores for the contest were 25-21, 25-15 and 25-22. With the result, the Panthers dropped to 1-5 on the year, while the Cougars stayed perfect at 3-0.

To begin the game, it was the hosts who jumped out to a fast start. The Panthers scored seven of the first eight points, before extending their margin to 19-12 later in the set.

But from there, the Cougars of Medgar Evers completely flipped the script on Purchase. The guests responded by scoring 12 of the next 13 points and 13 of the final 15 to earn the epic come-from-behind first-set victory, 25-21.

That momentum carried into the second set, as Medgar Evers powered its way to an early 9-4 lead. Eventually, the guests extended that advantage to 14-6, before the Panthers slowly started to fight their way back. On the heels of three-straight points, Purchase managed to cut the deficit to just four points at 19-15.

But the Cougars wouldn't be denied on the night and responded by winning the set with six-straight points.

In the final frame, Purchase again fell behind early, 9-3.

While the Panthers were able to hang with Medgar Evers throughout the set, getting as close as 22-21 late, the hosts just couldn't overcome the quick start of the guests and ultimately lost, 25-22.

The Panthers hit .076 overall, with 21 kills and 15 errors in the loss, while the Cougars finished with a .275 hitting percentage and 31 kills.

Individually, Jeremiah Huntt (SO/Bronx, NY) led Purchase with a team-high eight kills.

Chris Posillico (SO/Bay Shore, NY) added 11 digs, four kills and two aces, while Idris Idris (FR/Bronx, NY) and Andreo Otiniano (SR/Mamaroneck, NY) each tallied eight assists in the effort.

Up next for the Panthers is another non-conference home matchup, as the team hosts John Jay College on Feb. 6th. That match is set to begin at 7 p.m. and you can follow it here.
