Panthers Clinch Playoff Spot With Win Over Maritime

PURCHASE, NY - Following a dominating victory Saturday afternoon, the Purchase College men's basketball team officially punched its ticket to the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament at the end of the month.

The Panthers topped the Privateers of Maritime College, 88-69, to move their record to 15-6 overall and 10-2 in the Skyline.

By recording their 10th win, the Panthers clinched a spot in the postseason tournament, as they now have at least a five-game edge on seven of the 12 Skyline Conference teams with just four games to go. Their seed hasn't been decided though, as it could still range from one through eight.

It didn't take Purchase long to set the tempo, as the hosts scored the first five points of the day. While Maritime (9-12, 5-7 Sky) managed to keep things close during the opening minutes, the Panthers eventually began to bury the Privateers.

With 15:42 remaining the first half and the score 12-9 in Purchase's favor, the Panthers embarked a 12-0 run over the next two minutes to put the guests in a big hole early.

Despite the big deficit, Maritime was able to keep its head above water. Slowly, the guests fought their way back into the contest, getting the margin down to just three points, 41-38, with three minutes left in the first frame.

However, that was as close as the Privateers got the rest of the day, as Purchase stopped the bleeding with solid play over the final few minutes to carry a 48-40 lead into the break.

To start the second half, Maritime nailed a 3-pointer making it a five-point game, before the Panthers quickly extinguished any chance of a comeback with an 8-0 run. From there, the Panthers led 56-43 and held a double-digit lead for almost the entire second half.

On the day, Purchase shot 47.8% from the field. The Panthers lead the entire contest, minus the 0-0 score in the beginning, and absolutely crushed the guests on the boards, finishing with a 50-26 advantage. The hosts also rolled in points in the paint (48-24), fast-break points (18-11) and second-chance points (17-0).

Individually, Jorge Perdomo (JR/Bronx, NY) led the Panthers with a team-high 19 points. It was the fourth-straight game Perdomo led Purchase in scoring.

Meanwhile, Purchase had three other players finish with double-doubles in the win, as Elijah Lott (SR/Albany, NY) recorded 18 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Maxx Miller (SR/White Plains, NY) added 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Andre Peguero (JR/Boynton Beach, FL) collected 12 points and 12 rebounds.

As for Maritime, Brendon McGovern (SR/Seaford, NY) scored a team-high 19 points and Brennan Whelan (JR/Northport, NY) finished with 12 points and eight assists.

Up next for the Panthers is a Skyline Conference rematch against the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College. Back on January 11th, the Gryphons topped Purchase in overtime, 79-73, meaning the Panthers will be looking for some revenge this time.

The contest will be played at Sarah Lawrence on Feb. 11th at 8 p.m. and you can follow it right here.
