PURCHASE, NY - The Purchase College men's volleyball team earned its third-straight win Wednesday night, as the Panthers swept the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College in a Skyline Conference matchup.
Set scores for the contest were 25-18, 25-15 and 25-20.
With the win, Purchase moved to 5-7 overall and 3-1 in the Skyline, while the Gryphons dropped to 2-16 and 0-6, respectively.
On the night, the hosts finished with 41 kills and a .192 hitting percentage overall. Meanwhile, Sarah Lawrence recorded just 10 kills and hit -.045. Purchase also dominated in aces (11-2), assists (37-7) and points (55-15) to easily secure the win.
Despite the discrepancy in final numbers, it was actually the guests who jumped out to an early advantage in set one, as they scored six of the first eight points. Purchase responded by scoring six of the next seven points to grab the lead, 8-7.Â
From there, the two sides kept things close before the Panthers managed to blow the set open with five-straight points to get the lead to seven points, 19-12. Over the final 12 points, each side scored six to hand Purchase the opening set, 25-18.
Set two played out similarly to the first, as the two sides kept things close early. However, with the score 10-9 in favor of Purchase, the hosts embarked on another five-point rally midway through to give them the momentum and separation they needed.Â
After that point, Sarah Lawrence never got closer than five points the rest of the frame, as Purchase ended up winning, 25-15.
In the final stanza, the hosts led from start to finish, though the Gryphons did manage to stay right on the Panthers' heels for much of it.
It wasn't until the Panthers pulled off their final five-point rally of the night, that they were finally able to secure the distance needed between themselves and the guests. That run came with Purchase ahead, 17-15, and eventually propelled the hosts to the 25-20 win.
Individually,
Jeremiah Huntt (SO/Bronx, NY) led the Panthers with 14 kills and seven digs.
Joe Higgins (SO/College Point, NY) continued his run of good games with nine kills, four aces and three digs.Â
Senior
Andreo Otiniano (Mamaroneck, NY) recorded a season-high 15 digs, while
Idris Idris (FR/Bronx, NY) tallied 34 assists in the win.Â
For Sarah Lawrence, Felix Massey (SO/Palisades Pacific, CA) finished with five kills, two aces and 11 digs.
Up next for the two squads is a rematch with each other this weekend, as Sarah Lawrence hosts Purchase and Elizabethtown College for a tri-match on March 7th. The first contest is set to begin at 11 a.m.Â
