BRONXVILLE, NY - The Purchase College men's volleyball split a pair of road contests Saturday afternoon, topping Sarah Lawrence College in five sets before falling to Elizabethtown College, 3-0.
With the win and loss, the Panthers are now 6-8 overall. However, they are an impressive 4-1 in Skyline Conference games, which puts them in second in the conference.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown beat the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence in straight sets to close out the tri-match and moved to 13-9 with the wins. Sarah Lawrence dropped to 2-18 overall and 0-7 in the Skyline.
To start the morning, Purchase topped the hosts in five sets, 25-27, 25-8, 25-19, 25-27 and 15-1.
Despite the fact that the match went the distance, it was actually pretty lopsided in favor of the Panthers. Purchase hit .203 with 66 kills in the win, while Sarah Lawrence managed just 17 kills across the five sets.
The Panthers certainly enjoyed some success hitting the ball in the win, though they played anything but a clean match, as errors plagued them throughout. In fact, in the two sets the Panthers lost (both by the score 27-25), the guests handed the Gryphons 37 of their 54 points via errors.
Even with the miscues, Purchase had more than enough firepower to earn the Skyline win.
Sophomore
Jeremiah Huntt (SO/Bronx, NY) led the charge, as he recorded a career-high 30 kills. His previous mark was 18 kills, which he did twice as a freshman. Huntt also hit .389 and added six blocks (two solo), three digs and two aces in the win.
Joe Higgins (SO/College Point, NY) finished with a double-double, as he tallied 11 kills and 12 digs.
Christian Colon (JR/Bronx, NY) added nine kills, while
Thomas Slomka (SR/Orchard Park, NY) and
Chris Posillico (SO/Bay Shore, NY) each recorded seven kills.
Idris Idris (FR/Bronx, NY) tallied a career-high 47 assists to go along with an impressive match-best nine aces, while
Andreo Otiniano (SR/Mamaroneck, NY) finished with a game-high 21 digs.
Things didn't go as well for the Panthers in their second match of the afternoon, as they fell to the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College, 3-0. Set scores for the contest were 25-11, 25-16 and 25-12.
In all three sets, the Blue Jays used big-scoring runs early to jump ahead of Purchase, never allowing the guests to get back into the frames.
Hitting was a stark contrast in this matchup compared to the first game for the Panthers, as they recorded a hitting percentage of .000 and 17 kills. One bright spot though, Purchase managed to cut its hitting errors in half, finishing with just 17.
However, the skill of Elizabethtown was apparent from the beginning, as it powered its way to 32 kills on .383 hitting.
Huntt (six kills), Higgins (five) and Colon (four) led the Panthers' offense in the loss.
Up next for Purchase is a non-conference road matchup with Baruch College on March 10th at 6 p.m. You can follow along that game right here.
