Early Goal Proves Costly as Panthers Fall to Old Westbury

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – One early goal stood tall for the SUNY College at Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon. Behind junior midfielder Nicole Abalco, the host Panthers topped Purchase, 1-0.

The lone goal—a deflection off Abalco's right post shot—came less than nine minutes into the opening half.

Purchase (4-7, 2-5 Skyline) had some strong scoring opportunities at the outset, including a trio of consecutive shots from senior forward Rebecca Colgan (Valley Stream, NY) that were all saved by Old Westbury's Mallory Moretti. Colgan attempted another in the 20th minute but hit the crossbar, and was later shut down once again by Moretti in the 25th minute.

Purchase finished the half with seven shots (five on goal), while Old Westbury (4-9, 2-5 Skyline) recorded two on target.

In the second stanza, PC started strong as Colgan and junior forward Kristen Purcell (Sauquoit, NY) combined for six unanswered shots.

Fouls plagued the second half and provided additional chances for Purchase in its attacking third. The visiting Panthers, however, were unable to convert on the opportunities.

In the end, the early goal was the difference.

Moretti was a bright spot for Old Westbury on a day when goals were hard to come by. The graduate student finished with 13 saves.

Purchase held the advantage in shots (20-5) and corners (7-2).
