PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team battled the Valiants of Manhattanville College Saturday afternoon, ultimately falling on the road by the score of 1-0.
With the loss, the Panthers now sit at 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Skyline Conference. Meanwhile, Manhattanville improved to 3-4-2 and 2-0-1 respectively.
In the first half, the Valiants threatened repeatedly, recording two shots that hit the crossbar and 10 corner kicks over the 45 minutes. Despite all the opportunities, the two sides entered the midway break tied at 0-0.
That scoreless streak continued over the first 10 minutes of the second frame, before a direct free kick finally broke the deadlock. Following a foul, Manhattanville's Michael Mezzina (JR/Pompton Lakes, NJ) drilled a shot past Purchase's keeper,
Travis Stella (FR/Waterbury, NY), to give the hosts all they needed in the win.
After the goal, the Panthers' offense rose to the challenge by creating eight shots over the final 35 minutes, including two on goal and one that was blocked in the box. Sadly, the Valiants defense held firm and earned the shutout.
For the game, the Panthers were outshot 25-11 overall and 8-3 on goal. Stella finished with seven saves for the guests, while Luis Granados (SO/Pasadena, CA) tallied three stops and the clean sheet for the hosts.
