Panthers Outlast CCNY in Downpour

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Normally when people say, "It's raining cats and dogs out there," they are being facetious.

That was not the case Monday night, as the Purchase College men's soccer team bested The City College of New York in monsoon-like rain, 4-2, in a non-conference battle.

With the result, the hosts improved to 3-4 overall, while the Beavers of CCNY dropped to 2-3.

Juan Arboleda (SR/New Rochelle, NY) played the role of hero in the win, scoring twice, including the opening and the game-winning goals. His first came in the 21st minute, as he and Colman Cassidy (JR/Brooklyn, NY) played a bit of give-and-go off a short corner kick, which resulted in Arboleda's strike finding it's way into the back of the net.

11 minutes later, the guests knotted things up at 1-1, before the Panthers jumped back in front moments after courtesy of Leo Conte (SO/New York, NY), who drilled a shot past CCNY's keeper in the 34th minute.

From there, Arboleda collected the game winner in the 40th minute, when he caught the visiting defense and goalie sleeping on a free kick. Following the foul, the senior saw that CCNY was slow to setup defensively, so he quickly took the chance once the whistle blew and slotting it into the top right corner of goal.

The score remained 3-1 at halftime, before a goal just three minutes into the second half got the guests back into it. Over the next 40 minutes, the Beavers attempted to find an equalizer but where shunned by Mario Olmedo (JR/East Elmhurst, NY) and Panther defense each time.

Finally, Conte sealed the victory for the Panthers, as he slipped in a 90th-minute insurance goal for his second of the night.

Overall, Purchase outshot CCNY 15-8, while Olmedo, who came on in the 27th minute following an injury to Travis Stella (FR/Waterbury, NY), finished with two saves in the win.

Up next for the Panthers is a return to Skyline Conference action, as the team welcomes Sarah Lawrence College on October 6th. That game is set to begin at 7 p.m. and you can follow along here.
