PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team earned its first Skyline Conference win of the year Wednesday evening, topping the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College by the score of 2-0.
With the win, the Panthers are now 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference. As for Sarah Lawrence, the guests now sit at 3-7 and 1-3 respectively.
The result was well deserved for the hosts, as their offense and defense did an outstanding job. Offensively, Purchase produced 12 shots overall and six on goal, including the two strikes.Â
The first goal came in the 19th minute, when
Leo Conte (SO/New York, NY) assisted on
Nick Prata's (SR/Anaheim, CA) blast. With the lead, the Panthers' defense took over the rest of the half, holding Sarah Lawrence to just two shots (both off target) and two corners.
Once the second half began, things started to get physical. Overall, six cards were shown between the two squads, including a 66th-minute red card for the Gryphons.
Shortly after the card, the Panthers'
Jackson Stenborg (SR/Brooklyn, NY) gave the hosts the insurance goal they needed, as he scored in the 69th minute off a feed from
Avery Stevenson (JR/Massapequa Park, NY).
From there, Purchase's defense and it's keeper,Â
Mario Olmedo (JR/East Elmhurst, NY), who recorded four saves on the night, stood tall and earned the clean-sheet victory.
Up next for the men's soccer team is more Skyline Conference action, as the Panthers host Maritime College on October 9th at noon. You can follow along right here.Â
