Late Goals Sink Panthers Against Maritime

PURCHASE, N.Y. - A pair of goals during the final 13 minutes sank the Purchase College men's soccer team Saturday, as the Privateers of SUNY Maritime escaped with a 2-1 Skyline Conference road win.

With the results, the Panthers dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Meanwhile, the win propelled Maritime to 5-5 and 2-4 respectively.

The loss was a tough pill to swallow on the day for the hosts, as they played much of the game as the superior side. Purchase nearly got on the board early in the contest, when Nick Prata's (SR/Anaheim, CA) header needed saving from the opposing keeper in the 17th minute.

One minute later, it was the Panthers' defense that came to the rescue, as the back line made a goal line save to keep the game level at 0-0.

Finally, in the 32nd minute, the scoreless affair was broken, when Colman Cassidy (JR/Brooklyn, NY) slotted in a wonderful chance. After receiving a gorgeous cross from Avery Stevenson (SR/Massapequa Park, NY), Cassidy collected the ball, side-stepped two defenders in the box and unleashed a shot into the top right corner.

From there, the defense kept up it's end of the bargain, limiting Maritime to no shots the rest of the half.

In the second frame, things started to change slowly but surely between the two sides. Since the Privateers entered the final 45 minutes down, they started pushing further upfield to try and find an equalizer. While Maritime was able to create chances, the Purchase defense held firm.

On the other side of the field, the Panthers' offense looked for some insurance with another goal and were nearly rewarded in the 69th minute with it, following a long-ball in and a breakaway chance for Marlon Matute (FR/Staten Island, NY). After collecting the pass and racing downfield, the freshman unleashed a gorgeous low shot that was barely clipped by the outstretched fingers of Maritime's keeper.

As a result, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the hosts but not for much longer. In the 77th minute, Maritime's Thomas Krapp (SR/East Northport, NY) converted a wonderful give-and-go opportunity near that box that leveled the game at one-all.

From there, the Privateers gained a lot of momentum that eventually resulted in a free kick chance in the 86th minute. Krapp once again came up huge on the play, placing a masterful direct kick into the top right corner to hand the guests the lead with just minutes to go.

Sadly, the Panthers weren't able to find the back of the net over the final minutes and Maritime escaped with the 2-1 victory.

On the day, the Privateers outshot Purchase 22-9 overall, but both sides finished with five shots on goal apiece.

The Panthers will look to rebound on October 12th, when they host SUNY Old Westbury at 7 p.m. You can follow along here.
