Lehman Slips Past Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Purchase kept coming Monday, battling to the end against visiting Lehman College, but a notable eight-save performance in the second half by Lightning netminder Rebecca Gritz helped the visitors escape with a 2-1 win.

The non-conference game marked the second matchup between to the two teams this season. Lehman also swiped a win from PC, 1-0, on Sept. 15 in the Panthers' season-opener.

Lehman's Melanie Siranaula netted the first goal of the game in the opening half. Less than nine minutes into play, Siranaula found opportunity on a loose ball off a Lightning corner kick.

Purchase's Kristen Purcell (JR/Sauquoit, NY) netted the equalizer at 25:31. The standout forward collected a ball off a failed clear attempt by the visitors and ripped a shot past the keeper.

Both teams went scoreless to close the half tied at one apiece.

Melanie Huerta pushed the visitors out in front, 2-1, with an unassisted goal at 54:44. The Lehman midfielder shot far post from the end line, hitting the upper right corner of the net.

The Purchase offense had eight attempts in the final 45 minutes but was shut down by Gritz each time. Trailing by one goal and unable to score, the Panthers closed the match in defeat, 2-1.

Purchase held a 21-13 (13-6 on net) edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

In net for Purchase, sophopmore Haley Cascio recorded four saves. Gritz totaled 12 for Lehamn and picked up her third win of the season.

Monday's loss dropped Purchase to 2-5 overall, while the Lightning moved to an even .500 (3-3) with the win.

The Panthers look to bounce back with a win against Yeshiva University tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The Skyline game—originally scheduled at Yeshiva—will be played at the Purchase turf but will be recorded as an away match for the Panthers.
