FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Despite a valiant effort, the Purchase College women's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker Friday night, losing to The College at Old Westbury in four sets.

Set scores for the Skyline Conference battle were 25-16, 24-26, 25-15 and 25-23. 

With the result, Purchase dropped to 1-9 overall and 0-6 in the conference and the Panthers of Old Westbury improved to 3-5 and 2-3. 

While the final results were close, Old Westbury actually started off the game like a bat out of hell, scoring seven of the first eight points. The hosts eventually extended that lead to 19-9, before Purchase responded by scoring six of the next seven points to cut the deficit to 20-15. 

However, that was as close as the guests got the rest of the set, as Old Westbury eventually took it, 25-16.

The early start for the hosts carried over into the second frame, as they jumped out to another big lead at 7-2. This time though, the Purchase Panthers answered the call right away and rallied off four-straight points to make it 7-6. From there, Old Westbury held the lead for a bit, before a three-point run gave the guests their first advantage of the frame at 12-11.

The Old Westbury squad responded quickly though, retaking the lead and holding it for much of the match. It wasn't until very late in the set that the visiting Panthers managed to jump back in front. That came after the squad was down 23-20, when Purchase reeled off six of the final seven points to steal the set, 26-24.

Following the set loss, Old Westbury responded with a vengeance in the third stanza, building up it's lead to as many as 14 points en route to the 25-15 win.

Finally, in the final frame, it was Purchase that jumped out in front and lead most of the way this time around. In fact, the guests lead late into the contest, up by the margin of 18-15, before the hosting Panthers snatched it all away. They did so by embarking on an eight-point run, turning the deficit into a 23-18 lead.

Purchase went down fighting though, scoring five of the next six points to cut the score to 24-23, before an Old Westbury block sent the hosts home with the win. 

Overall, the visiting Panthers finished with 30 kills on .072 hitting for the night, while the host Panthers enjoyed totals of 46 kills and .166 hitting. 

Skyla Schoppmeyer (SR/Oakdale, NY) led the way for Purchase, finishing with a team-high 11 kills, 11 digs and four aces. 

Elsewhere, Samantha Fasce (JR/Yorktown Heights, NY) added eight kills and 13 digs and Karina Medina (SR/Brooklyn, NY) recorded team-highs in assists (21) and digs (18).
