PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College women's soccer team was unable to hold off an opportunistic Sarah Lawrence offense in a 6-1 loss at home Saturday night.
With the loss, Purchase slides to 3-6 on the season and 2-4 in Skyline Conference play, while Sarah Lawrence improves to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the league.
The visitors scored on their first possession of the game when Cora Colvin took a pass from Lainie Cadieux and tallied on a breakaway in the opening minute.
Samantha Lungren and Lynn Rech teamed up to score the Gryphons' second goal at 9:36.
After giving up the second goal, the Panthers outshot (on goal) Sarah Lawrence, 3-2, before intermission, but could not convert on any of their scoring opportunities. At the half, Purchase was down 2-0.
The visitors opened the second half in similar fashion to the first 45, scoring a pair of goals early to stretch their advantage to 4-0. The Gryphons tacked on a fifth with a shot from Lungren at 65:46. Ren recorded the assist.
Purchase pushed back with a trio of attempts but was denied by Gryphon goalie Camryn Hellinger. Hellinger came off the bench to start the second half in net for Sarah Lawrence.
Finally, with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation, senior tri-captain
Rebecca Colgan (SR/Valley Stream, NY) lit up the board for the hosts with a stellar shot taken 30 yards out. The PC veteran—seeing a scoring opportunity after Hellinger came out too far inside the box—ripped a shot over the keeper's head and into the back of the net.
Despite continued pressure from Purchase, Sarah Lawrence capitalized on its next offensive opportunity when Izzy Deltoro bested Panther netminder
Haley Cascio (SO/Deer Park, NY) at 77:37.
The visitors closed the match with the 6-1 advantage, securing their fourth-straight Skyline win.
Purchase looks to bounce back from Saturday's loss when the team returns to action on Monday. The Panthers celebrate Senior Night with a non-conference game against the Pratt Institute. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
