Box Score PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Purchase women's tennis team suffered a tough 5-4 loss at St. Joseph's College (LI) Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers (5-3, 3-2 Skyline) opened scoring for the match following an 8-3 performance from
Kali Secrest (SO/Pleasantville, NY) and
Julie Shuett (SR/Northport, NY) at third doubles.
St. Joe's (3-4,3-2 Skyline) answered back with wins at first and second doubles to take a 2-1 lead.
In singles competition, the Golden Eagles stretched their lead to 3-1 with a win at the No. 2 position. SJC's Jessica Jones defeated Panther rookie
Olivia Menchell (FR/Weston, CT) by a score of 6-2, 6-0.
First and fifth singles were next in line to finish. Junior ace
Nikita Kordzielewska (Stepnica, Poland) battled to a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Madison DiPalo at the No. 1 spot, and sophomore standout
Elaina Coppola recorded the equalizer with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at No. 5 singles.
The match would later tie again (4-4) following the finishes of fourth and third singles, respectively. SJC tallied the score at No. 4 and Purchase's
Isabel Biagiotti (SR/Highland Mills, NY) took the tally at No. 3 with a super set core of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
In her first-ever singles appearance, Shuett put on a stellar performance against SJC's Angelina DeMonte. The matchup went into a super set tiebreaker with DeMonte taking the win, 6-1, 3-6, 6-7 (7-4).
As a result, SJC would secure the 5-4 match victory.
The Panthers will take a short break and return to action next Saturday (Oct. 16) for a non-conference match at Hunter College. Start time is 12 p.m.
