Panthers' Late Rally Falls Short at York

JAMAICA, N.Y. - Despite a furious rally to closeout the game Tuesday evening, the Purchase College women's basketball team ultimately fell to the Cardinals of York College in a non-conference matchup, 64-59.

The Panthers (0-5), who trailed by as many as 16 points with just over three minutes remaining, embarked on a 15-3 scoring run to cut the deficit to just four points, 63-59, with 49 seconds left.

From there, Purchase utilized the foul and pray method, as the guests needed York to miss free throws down the stretch to keep their hopes alive. And shockingly, York did just that.

During the final 49 seconds, the Cardinals went just 1-for-6 at the foul line, leaving the door open for Purchase. Unfortunately, the Panthers couldn't convert a basket the rest of the way, as York (1-1) escaped with the 64-59 win.

Before the furious rally in the final quarter tightened things up, York started the game in the driver's seat and held that position throughout the first three periods. To begin, the hosts jumped out to an 11-0 lead, before PC got within four points early in the second.

Over the rest of the first half, the Cardinals rebuilt their lead to enjoy a nine-point advantage at halftime, 30-21. In the third quarter, York come out on fire and extended its margin to as many as 20 points, before the Panthers started to slowly chip away at the deficit, leading to the epic fourth-quarter rally.

On the night, the Cardinals shot an impressive 47.4 percent from the field, but were almost done in by 31 turnovers. As for Purchase, the guests tallied a 30.7 field goal percentage and 16 turnovers.

Individually, Ariella Johnson (SO/Brooklyn, NY) continued her breakout campaign, finishing with season and team-high totals in points (20) and rebounds (10).

Meanwhile, the Panthers got double-digit points from Miya Ritchie (SR/Harlem, NY) and Shamoni Berrios (SO/Bronx, NY), as the pair finished with 12 points and 11 points, respectively.

Up next for Purchase is a return to Skyline Conference action, as the Panthers host Sarah Lawrence College on December 2nd at 7 p.m. You can follow along here.
