PURCHASE, N.Y. - Saturday's contest was a tale of two halves for the Purchase College women's basketball team, as the Panthers lost to the Hawks of Hunter College, 62-48, in a non-conference battle.
During the opening 20 minutes, Purchase led by as many as nine points before the guests rallied late in the second quarter to tie things up at 28-all. From there, the hosts concluded the half on a 5-0 run, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from
Ariella Johnson (SO/Brooklyn, NY), to lead 33-28 at the break.
The third frame began nicely for the Panthers, as they extended their margin back to seven points, 37-30, before three-straight 3-pointers from Hunter turned the tide in the contest.
After the 3-point barrage, the hosts stopped the bleeding with a layup from
Shamoni Berrios (SO/Bronx, NY), tying the game at 39-all. However, Purchase never tied or lead again in the contest, as the guests closed out the third quarter with an 8-3 scoring run to lead 47-42.
In the fourth, the Hawks opened with seven-straight points and an 11-2 run to put some distance between the squads, before eventually earning the 14-point win.Â
On the day, the Panthers finished with a better overall shooting percentage compared to Hunter, outpacing them 38.3 to 34.3 percent. However, the guests nailed 12 3-pointers to Purchase's two in the win and easily won the turnover battle, 27-15.Â
Individually,
Shadai Plowden (SR/Yonkers, NY) paced the home team with 14 points and nine rebounds. Johnson added 10 points, while Berrios grabbed 11 rebounds in the defeat.
With the result, the Panthers dropped to 0-8, while Hunter moved to 3-6.Â
