PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team was defeated in a pair of Skyline Conference games Saturday afternoon, falling to SUNY Maritime by the scores of 2-0 and 8-7.
With the results, the Panthers dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the Skyline. As for the Privateers of Maritime, they are now 2-0 in both.
The contests turned out to be polar opposites, as pitching and lack of offense was the rule of law in game one but completely flipped in game two.
To start the afternoon, the guests got on the scoreboard in the top of the first thanks to some crafty base running from Adam Mosca (SR/Massapequa Park, NY). After reaching base on a double, Mosca stole third during the next at bat, before scoring a run on a stolen-base throw to second.
From there, the two teams remained scoreless for the next six innings until Maritime added an insurance run in the seventh frame. During that time, the Panthers collected just two hits, both courtesy of
Dylan Flynn (SR/Smithtown, NY).Â
Flynn put the hosts in their best-scoring opportunity of the contest with a lead-off triple in the fourth, but was unable to be brought home after. In the sixth, Flynn connected on a 1-out double to left field, before advancing to third on a ground out one batter later. Unforunatley, he was stranded once again to end the inning.
Purchase's only other hit of game one came from
Jemal Betances (JR/Bronx, NY) on a single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh.
On the mound,
Cody Hennequin (SR/Milford, CT) kept the home team in the contest throughout following a six-inning outing. On the day, he finished with seven strikeouts and allowed two runs on six hits.Â
For the guests, Ryan Ragone (JR/Yonkers, NY) earned the win after a one-hit four-inning day.
Following the pitchers' duel in game one, the two teams decided to light up the scoreboard in game two as the guests outlasted Purchase, 8-7.
After being held scoreless earlier, it was the Panthers who jumped out to the lead this time around when
Josh Ferro (SR/ Queens, NY) and Betances knocked in runs on a sacrifice fly and a single respectively.
Two innings later, Ferro knocked in another run all by himself as he blasted a solo home run down the left field line to make in 3-0.Â
Maritime wasn't fazed though, as the squad managed to battle back just an inning later with a pair of runs. Then in the top of the fifth, the Privateers added three more runs to sneak ahead of Purchase, 5-3.
However, the Panthers answered right back in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-RBI single from
Matthew Mulligan (JR/Yaphunk, NY). One batter later, Betances scored from third base on a failed pick-off attempt to put the hosts back in front.Â
James May (JR/Floral Park, NY) then padded the lead with an RBI-single in the sixth inning to make it 7-5 and wrap up the scoring for the Panthers.
Unfortunately, Purchase was unable to hold the lead as a throwing error in the seventh allowed two runs to score and a RBI-double from Matt Eng (SR/Brooklyn, NY) in the eight frame put Maritime ahead for good, 8-7.
On the mound, the Panthers' starting pitcher,
Ryan Kozersky (SR/Mount Kisco, NY) went the longest of any pitcher in the game at 4.1 innings. He finished with five runs allowed on five hits and added two strikeouts.Â
At the plate, May led the squad with four hits, including a double in the loss. Meanwhile,
Matthew Nilsen (SR/Bellmore, NY) added three hits and Shea, Ferro and Mulligan all had two hits each.
Up next for the Panthers is another doubleheader with SUNY Maritime, this time on the road. Those games are scheduled to begin tomorrow (3/21) at noon.Â
