THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team earned a pair of impressive wins Sunday afternoon, as the Panthers topped the Privateers of SUNY Maritime by the scores of 2-1 and 2-0.
Junior starting pitcher
Alex Doskoez (Eastport, NY) carried the Panthers in game one with 14 strikeouts over his nine-inning complete game. Doskoez, who was making just his second-career appearance for Purchase, actually started the game by walking the first batter, Matt Eng (SR/Brooklyn, NY).
Eng then proceeded to steal second and third base, before coming home two batters later on an RBI-double from Travis Zurita (SR/Ozone Park, NY). From that point on though, Doskoez became nearly untouchable.
Over the next eight innings, he allowed just one more hit, no runs and recorded five 1-2-3 innings.
Even more impressively, of those five 1-2-3 frames, Doskoez actually fanned the entire side twice, including in the ninth inning against Maritime's two, three and four hitters to seal the victory.
It was a good thing that Doskoez was dealing too, because through the first six innings Sunday, the Panther offense was held scoreless. That streak was finally broken in the top of the seventh, thanks to RBI-doubles from
Dylan Flynn (SR/Smithtown, NY) and
Josh Ferro (SR/Queens, NY).Â
With the 2-1 lead in hand, Doskoez proceeded to seal the victory with his arm.
As the two teams moved onto game two, the Panthers' pitching continued to excel and led to a 2-0 win.
The second game shutout was fueled byÂ
Alex Miller (JR/Reno, NV),
Jackson Lowery (SO/Woodbridge, VA),
Elijah Diaz (FR/Brooklyn, NY) and
Michael Laskowski (SR/Floral Park, NY), as the quartet allowed just six hits over seven innings.
Lowery earned the win after a hitless two-inning outing and Laskowski collected the save with a hitless seventh frame.
While Purchase's pitching continued to dazzle in game two, its bats remained tepid. The Panthers only managed three hits this time, including a leadoff single from
James Shea (JR/Brooklyn, NY). Following the single, Shea stole second and advanced to third on a ground out one batter later.Â
Shea then scored on the next play via an RBI-ground out from
Myles Scarry (FR/Levittown, NY). From there, the game remained 1-0 in favor of the guests until the sixth inning, when Purchase added the final run of the afternoon.
The run came off some classic small-ball baseball too, as
Aristo Pagiatakis (FR/Flushing, NY) started the frame by drawing a walk. He then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a ground out to the first baseman. During the ensuing at-bat, Pagiatakis sprinted home to score when Maritime tossed wild pitch to closeout the win.
With the pair of victories, the Panthers are now 4-4 overall and 2-4 in Skyline Conference games. Meanwhile, the losses dropped the Privateers to 2-2 and 2-1 respectively.
Up next for Purchase is a road doubleheader with Skyline rival, Farmingdale State College on March 27th. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon and you can follow along live online.Â
