Baseball Drops Pair at Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team suffered two losses Saturday afternoon against its Skyline Conference rival, Farmingdale State College, by the scores of 7-1 and 8-7 in extra innings.

With the defeats, the Panthers are now 4-6 overall and 2-6 in Skyline Conference games. As for the Rams, the hosts improved to 5-1 and 5-0 respectively.

Game one was a pretty blah outing for the guests, as Farmingdale jumped in front early by scoring three runs in the first, one in the second and two more in the third. Purchase's lone run during the 7-1 loss came in the sixth inning, when Tighe Jorgensen (SR/Fairfield, CT) scored on an error via a failed pick-off attempt.

The Panthers finished with five hits in the effort, as Josh Ferro (SR/Queens, NY) belted a double in the fourth. On the mound, Cody Hennequin (SR/Milford, CT) was tagged with the loss after he lasted just one inning and allowed four runs.

While game one might have been all Farmingdale, game two turned out to be a coin-flip that just so happened to land with the Rams.

After the hosts opened the second contest with a pair of runs in the first, Purchase responded right back with runs if its own.

To start the second frame, James May (JR/Floral Park, NY) drew a walk and advanced to second on throwing error. He then advanced to third base after a Jemal Betances (JR/Bronx, NY) single and eventually scored during the next at-bat as Matthew Mulligan (SR/Yaphank, NY) got on base following a Farmingdale error.

Mulligan and Betances later advanced to second and third base respectively, following a wild pitch from the Rams. After that, Jason Sebastiano (FR/Brooklyn, NY) and Isaac Reyes (FR/East Islip, NY) drew back-to-back walks to score the second run of the contest for the Panthers.

During the next at-bat, the guests added two more runs following a fielder's choice for James Shea (JR/Brooklyn, NY) and another error from the Rams to make the score 4-2.

Farmingdale managed to get one of the runs back in the bottom of the second to make it 4-3, before the two sides went scoreless over the next two innings. The hosts finally managed to break the scoreless streak with three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to regain the lead, 7-4.

As for the Panthers, they couldn't buy a run during the scoreless drought. Luckily, it finally came to an end in the seventh inning, when Ferro scored on a gifted wild pitch. The two sides then remained in a 7-5 holding pattern until the top of the ninth, when the Panther bats finally awoke to keep the game alive.

The ninth did start a bit shaky though, as two of the first three batters of the inning recorded outs. In-between the outs, Dylan Flynn (SR/Smithtown, NY) keep things alive with a single, before a single from May put runners on first and second.

From there, Matthew Nilsen (SR/Bellmore, NY) come through in the clutch with an RBI-single to cut the deficit to 7-6. Purchase wasn't done though, as Betances tied the contest during the next at-bat with an RBI-single of his own, pushing the score to a 7-7 deadlock.

Purchase then held off Farmingdale in the bottom of the ninth to extend the contest to extra innings. Sadly, the game didn't last beyond the tenth frame.

After Purchase produced a 1-2-3 top of the 10th, the Rams led off the bottom of the frame with a double. Shortly after, the hosts loaded the bases, before collecting a walk-off win via a sacrifice fly ball to right field.

It was certainly a tough loss for the Panthers after making such a comeback, but games like that always build character for later in the year.

Nilsen enjoyed a successful game two, as he went 3-for-4 at the plate. Meanwhile, Betances finished with two hits and May tallied a hit and two walks in the defeat.

On the mound, Panthers' starter Alex Doskoez (JR/Eastport, NY) went five innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits. Jackson Lowery (SO/Woodbridge, VA) was tagged with the loss.

Up next for Purchase is another doubleheader with the Rams of Farmingdale State, this time at home. The two sides are set to meet March 29th at 2 p.m. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for tomorrow but was postponed due to impending weather. You can follow the contests right here.
