NEWBURGH, NY - The Purchase College softball team was defeated twice Monday afternoon, falling to the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College by the scores of 17-5 and 15-5.
The Panthers are now 0-8 overall and 0-6 in Skyline Conference games. Meanwhile, the Knights improved to 4-0 and 3-0 respectively.
Mount Saint Mary College started the day with a bang, as the hosts put up eight runs in the first, five in the second and four in the third. Despite the major deficit, the Panthers never quit in the contest, as they managed to battle back with two runs of their own in the third.
The runs came courtesy ofÂ
Alexandria Perez (JR/Bronx, NY), who drilled an RBI-double and
Brianna Palermo (SO/Hyde Park, NY), who scored Perez during the next at-bat via a ground out to second base.Â
Purchase then added three more runs in the fifth, as
Kelly Agostini (SR/Centereach, NY),
Hannah Cronin (FR/Granby, CT) andÂ
Zanaia Godette (SO/Queens, NY) all tallied RBI-singles in the frame.Â
In game two, things started better for Purchase, as it scored the first run of the contest. Following a lead-off walk from Perez, Palermo and Agostini both got on base via Mount St. Mary errors, before Godette hit an RBI-ground out to first base.
The lead was short lived though, as the Knights responded by scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first. The hosts then added four more runs in the third and two in fourth to lockup the win.
Despite the deficit, the Panthers kept fighting into the fifth inning and cut in to the margin on an RBI-double from
Jaiya Hewitt (JR/Kingston, NY), a two-run single from Agostini and an RBI-ground out from
Haley Maerz (SR/Goshen, NY).Â
Even with the loss, game two represents the best offensive production of the season for the Panthers, as their 11 hits were a season-high and the five runs tied their season-best total from game one.Â
Hewitt, Cronin and
Jade D'Errico (FR/Wantagh, NY) each tallied a pair of hits in the loss, while Agostini was tagged with both losses on the mound.
Up next for the Panthers is a week off, before they return to action against Manhattanville College on April 10th. That doubleheader will be on the road and begins at noon.Â
