PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College baseball team lost a pair of matchups Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College by the scores of 3-2 and 5-2.
With the results, the Panthers are now 7-13 overall and 4-11 in Skyline Conference games. Meanwhile, Mount St. Mary moved to 4-5 and 3-4, respectively.
In game one, the guests managed to eek out the win in extra innings after the two sides played a well-battled contest. For the Knights, all three of their runs and much of their offensive production was provided by Jack Goodwin (SR/Poughkeepsie, NY).
Goodwin opened the contest with a two-run home run in the top of the first, before tallying singles in the third and fifth, a double in eight and the game-winning RBI-single in the 10th to claim the win.
For the game, Goodwin finished with five hits, three RBIs, one run and a stolen base.
As for the Panthers, they got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth after
Myles Scarry (FR/Levittown, NY) drew a bases-loaded walk to cut the margin to 2-1. One inning later, the
Skyline Conference Player of the Week,
Dylan Flynn (SR/Smithtown, NY), crushed an RBI-double to right field to knot things up at 2-all.
From there, Purchase had chances to win the contest in regular innings, as the hosts left Flynn stranded at second in the seventh and loaded the bases in the eighth, only to come away with nothing to show for it.
A few frames later, Goodwin and the Knights made them pay, as they escaped with the 3-2 win.
On the hill, Panthers' starter
Ryan Kozersky (SR/Mount Kisco, NY) went four innings in the no decision effort. He allowed two runs on six hits, while freshman
Justin Doskoez (Eastport, NY) collected the loss in relief.
In game two, the offense for each side remained quiet early until the guests broke the deadlock in the fourth inning with three runs. The Knights then scored a run in the fifth and sixth frames to push their margin to 5-0, before Purchase managed to score a couple of its own.
The pair of runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the Panthers started off with a
Tighe Jorgensen (SR/Fairfield, CT) single and back-to-back walks from
Drew Stabinsky (FR/Floral Park, NY) and
Aristo Pagiatakis (FR/Flushing, NY). From there, freshman
Isaac Reyes (East Islip, NY) stepped to the plate and drilled a single to left field, which drove in Jorgensen and Stabinsky.
Unfortunately, the hosts were unable to tally anymore runs in the frame and ultimately fell by the score of 5-2 to closeout the day.
In the loss, Jorgensen led the effort with two hits and was hit by a pitch. On the mound, Scarry collected the loss after he allowed three runs over four innings of work.
Up next for the Panthers is more Skyline Conference doubleheader action, as they are set to host Maritime College on April 17th. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. and you can follow it here.
