Carvell's Walk-Off Hit Powers Panthers to Doubleheader Split

Hennequin records 100th career strikeout in game one; Doskoez picks up his third complete game performance of the season in game two

Purchase, NY – The Purchase College baseball team split their doubleheader against Skyline Conference rival Maritime College at home on Saturday. The host Panthers (8-14) dropped game one, 4-2, in a seven-inning game, before claiming game two by a score of 3-2 in walk-of fashion. The twinbill did not count towards Skyline standings.

Game One: Maritime 4, Purchase 2
Maritime (5-4) struck first in the opener with a run in the top of the first inning, but senior second baseman Dylan Flynn (Smithtown, NY) scored off a James May (JR/Floral Park, NY) RBI single in the bottom half to tie the game, 1-1.

In the following inning, senior outfielder Matthew Milligan (Yaphank, NY) pushed PC out in front, 2-1, with a RBI double to the right center gap.

Purchase starter Cody Hennequin (SR/Stratford, CT) would hold the Privateers scoreless over the next three innings, notching his 100th-career strikeout along the way. The tally came in the top of the sixth against Maritime leadoff hitter Travis Zurita. (click here to watch)

After Zurita went down swinging however, Maritime rallied with three unearned runs to take a 4-2 lead. Austen Bishop batted in the first two runners and game-winning swipe with a double to left center. He later came around to score on a Ryan Rockhill RBI triple to right field.

Purchase came close to making a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs on the board and the bases loaded, May ripped a shot to right field but came up short with a flyout that ended the game.

Despite a solid performance on the mound, Hennequin (1-4) was tagged with the loss. The Panther veteran pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three runs (1 ER) on six hits and striking out two.

Game Two: Purchase 3, Maritime 2
Similar to game one, Maritime was first to break the scoring ice. Adam Mosca earned the RBI with a homer to left field in the top of the first inning.

Purchase answered back in the bottom of the first with a Josh Ferro (SR/Queens, NY) RBI single that drove Flynn in from second to score.

The Panthers lit up the board again in the bottom of the fourth. In only his fourth start for Purchase, right fielder Vincent Padula (FR/Cape Coral, FL) recorded the go-ahead run with a bomb over the left field wall. The homerun was a career-first for the Panther rookie.

Maritime evened the score (2-2) with a homerun by Freddy Forgione in the top of the seventh, but Panther ace Alex Doskoez (JR/Eastport, NY) would hold the Privateers to just one hit over the next two innings.

Then, in the bottom of the ninth with runners at first and second, a walk-off single from sophomore pinch hitter Louis Carvell pushed teammate James Shea (JR/Brooklyn, NY) across home plate and secured the victory for the home team.

Doskoez (3-1) notched his third complete game on the mound for Purchase. He recorded a notable six strikeouts, while only giving up two runs on six hits over 9.0 innings of work.
