Throggs Neck, N.Y. – Purchase baseball split with Maritime in a road doubleheader Sunday to wrap up the four-game weekend series with the Privateers.
Maritime produced four runs late in game one to take the opener, 12-8, but Purchase's
Ryan Castrataro (Mahopac, NY) made sure game two didn't have the same fate. The sophomore starter notched his first win of the season, hurling 6.0 shutout innings to lead the Panthers to a 9-0 victory in game two.
Game One: Maritime 12, Purchase 8
The opener saw offensive efforts from both sides. Purchase broke open the scoring, plating a run in the top of the first inning on a
James May (JR/Floral Park, NY) groundout. Maritime evened the score in the bottom half on a RBI single from Ryan Rockhill.
Purchase went scoreless over the next two innings while the Privateers plated three runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The Panthers fired back in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs.
Jemal Betances (JR/Bronx, NY) reached on a hit-by-pitch and came around to score on a passed ball.
Matthew Mulligan (JR/Yaphank, NY) was the second runner to score after reaching with a two-base knock to right center.
Purchase gave up runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth but the Panther bats stayed hot, eventually tying the game, 6-6, in the sixth inning. Mulligan's leadoff walk, followed by a
Vincent Padula (FR/Cape Coral, NJ) sacrifice bunt, a
Tighe Jorgensen (SR/Fairfield, CT) single and a
James Shea (JR/Brooklyn, NY) fielder's choice, produced the first run. Jorgensen scored the tying run on a balk.
Maritime jumped back out in front with two runs on two hits in the bottom of he seventh, but Purchase used some clutch hitting of their own to tie the game at 8-apiece in the eighth. In the bottom half of the inning, with the bases loaded, Maritime's Ryan Mosca drove the ball to deep center field and cleared the bases to give the Privateers an 11-8 lead. Mosca later scored (12-8) on a wild pitch.
The Panthers were unable to make a comeback in the ninth as Purchase took the loss for game one.
Game Two: Purchase 9, Maritime 0
Purchase outhit Maritime in game two, owning eight more base knocks than the Privateers. Three of the Panthers' 12 hits came from outfielder
Drew Stabinsky (FR/Floral Park, NY). The standout rookie went 3-for-5 with two doubles, one run and an impressive four RBI.
Matthew Nilsen (SR/Bellmore, NY),
Jason Sebastiano (FR/Brooklyn, NY) and
Dylan Flynn (SR/Smithtown, NY) had two hits apiece, while May, Shea and
Connor O'Rourke (JR/Massapequa, NY) rounded out the offensive effort with a combined three hits.
Castrataro (1-1) headlined the game-two victory, finishing with an impressive eight strikeouts and no runs, while giving up only three hits over 6.0 innings on the hill.
