Purchase, N.Y. – Paced by solid pitching and a strong offensive showing, the Purchase College baseball team swept Yeshiva University with back-to-back 19-0 shutout scores Friday morning.
With the wins, the Panthers advanced their win streak to three games and moved to 11-15 on the season and 6-11 in Skyline Conference play. In defeat, the Maccabees dropped to 0-10 overall and 0-8 in the league.
Game One: Purchase 19, Yeshiva 0
Purchase put the game out of reach early, scoring seven runs in the top of the second inning.
Senior
Dylan Flynn (Smithtown, NY) broke open the scoring with a 3-RBI triple to left field, followed by RBI singles from rookie outfielder
Myles Scarry (FR/Levittown, NY) and junior designated hitter
James May (Floral Park, NY). The Panthers scored the final two runs of the inning off Yeshiva errors.
Purchase lit up the board again in the third, fourth and sixth innings with a combined 12 runs to secure the 19-0 victory in game one.
Flynn led the Panther offense, going 2-for-5 with four RBI and three runs. May, Matthew Nilson (SR/Bellmore, NY),
Tighe Jorgensen (SR/Fairfield, CT) and
James Shea (JR/Brooklyn, NY) also finished with two hits apiece, while Scarry went 1-for-2 with three runs and two RBI.
Panther ace
Alex Doskoez (JR/Eastport, NY) (4-1) earned his first career shutout on the mound. He held the Maccabee lineup to just three hits over seven innings, while striking out seven.
Game Two: Purchase 19, Yeshiva 0
Purchase used 19 hits and a pair of Yeshiva errors to drive in 19 runs over four innings.
Junior
Max Vera (Bethpage, NY) paced the Panther lineup, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. Senior
Jemal Betances (bronx, NY) went 2-for-4 and came around to score a team-best three runs, while Flynn scored twice and recorded a notable career-high five stolen bases.
On the mound for Purchase, sophomore
Ryan Castrataro (Mahopac, NY) notched his first complete-game shutout, fanning two and allowing just two hits over 7.0 innings of work.
The Panthers will be back on their home diamond against Yeshiva again on Sunday. The Senior Day doubleheader is slated to start at 11 a.m.
