PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College softball team was defeated in a pair of Skyline Conference contests Saturday afternoon, falling to the Bears of St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn by the scores of 9-0 and 6-1.
With the losses, the Panthers fell to 0-14 overall and 0-11 in Skyline play. Meanwhile, the Bears now sit at 10-3 and 8-3, respectively.
Game one was all St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn from the beginning, as the squad put up one run in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth.Â
Despite the defeat, Purchase produced a handful of chances by getting runners into scoring opportunities in the second and fourth frames, including loading the bases in the later.Â
In the loss,
Julia Marsala (FR/Shoreham, NY) finished with a hit and walk, while
Zanaia Godette (SO/Queens, NY) tallied a double.Â
While game one might have gone to the guests with relative ease, game two was a much closer affair. To begin, Panthers' pitcher
Kelly Agostini (SR/Centereach, NY) limited the guests to just two hits over the first three innings in her best outing of the season.
As the teams switched sides to play the bottom of the third, it was Purchase that snagged the lead. Following a double from
Alexandria Perez (JR/Bronx, NY), Agostini helped herself by hitting a single to left field and moving Perez to third.Â
During the next at-bat,
Jaiya Hewitt (JR/Kingston, NY) singled to center field to score Perez and give the Panthers the advantage.
Purchase had a couple of more chances in the frame, but were thwarted by pitcher Brianna Kilimet (FR/Valley Stream, NY), after she was called on by the Bears to stop the bleeding.
From there, St. Joseph's started to pull away as it put up three runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth. Purchase managed to keep things close over the next handful of innings, but was unable to replicate it's early-game offense.
Eventually, the Bears added two more runs to seal the win, as they escaped with the 6-1 final score.
Agostini finished with two hits at the plate and allowed just two earned runs on the mound.
Karina Medina (JR/Brooklyn, NY) collected a pair of walks in the defeat.Â
Up next for the Panthers is another doubleheader with these same Bears, as the two squads are set to battle again tomorrow (4/18). First pitch is scheduled for noon and you can follow it here.Â
