Purchase, N.Y. – The long wait finally came to an end as the Purchase College women's tennis team returned to action on Friday for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic started. With new head coach
Anna Yates at the helm, the Panthers opened the Spring 2021 season at home against Skyline Conference foe Farmingdale State.
Purchase (0-1) dropped the league decision to the visiting Rams (2-1) by a score of 9-0.
Farmingdale set the tone early by sweeping the doubles competition. At the No. 1 spot, Panther duo
Raquelle DeCicco (SR/Kingston, NY) and
Nikita Kordzielewska (SO/Poland, NY) battled but came up short, 8-5, against Anastasia Hoffman and Shari Jackson.
Nicole Sliwinski (SR/Newington, CT) and
Kali Secrest (FR/Hartsdale, NY) dropped the second singles match, 8-1, to Rosa Lettieri and Stephanie Negrillo.
At No. 1 singles, DeCicco put up a tough fight but came out on the losing end of a 6-3, 8-7 (7-4) tiebreaker decision. Kordzielewska took the loss at the second seed with a 6-0, 6-7 (10-12), 12-10 super set, while Sliwinski, Secrest and
Madeline Makowski (SO/Greenlawn, NY) were defeated at third, fourth and fifth singles, respectively.
Purchase received a walkovers at third doubles and sixth singles due to a shortened Panther lineup.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow, playing host to the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College (LI). The Skyline match is slated for 11 a.m.
