BRONX, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team suffered a tough loss Monday night, falling to Lehman College in overtime by the score of 2-1.
The game-winning goal came with just under 30 seconds left in the first overtime, as the Lightning of Lehman converted a penalty kick that was setup by a Panther handball in the penalty box. It was an unfortunate result in the contest, as the guests battled back from an early 1-0 deficit.Â
With the loss, the Panthers dropped to 1-1 on the year, while Lehman improved to 2-1-1 overall.Â
The host Lightning struck first on the night when Mohammad Jagne (JR/Gambia) found the back of the net in the 22nd minute, beating Purchase keeper
Travis Stella (FR/Waterbury, NY) to the lower left of net.
The score remained 1-0 into the halftime break and beyond, until a wonderful play from
Bart Moroney (FR/Breezy Point, NY) knotted things up in the 55th minute. Moroney capitalized off a Purchase free kick, in which Lehman's keeper came out to punch it away but didn't get a clean hit on it. As a result, the ball bounced out in front of the box, but only slightly, landing near the feet of Moroney.
The freshman then collected the ball, dribbled slightly to his right and unleashed a shot from easily 35 yards out. The shot was perfect, as it found its way just under the crossbar and just over the keeper's outstretched arm. Upon seeing the impressive goal, Moroney was swarmed by teammates to celebrate.
Following the goal though, the Lehman defense clamped down on the Panthers' offense, allowing just two more shots (none on goal) over the rest of the contest.Â
After the 90-minute horn sounded sending the game to overtime, both sides knew the game was a coin-flip.
During the overtime frame, Stella did all he could to keep the game going, making a pair of incredible saves over a two-minute stretch late in the period, including a full-extension punch save just before the penalty shot.Â
As for the penalty, it was Jagne that converted the chance, as he blasted the shot to the opposite side that Stella guessed. As Lehman raced to the corner flag to celebrate the goal and win, the Panthers left the field with their heads held high following the valiant effort.
On the night, Stella finished with a career-high nine saves for the guests, as the Lehman outshot Purchase, 14-5.Â
The Panthers won't have a long time to think about the loss however, as they are back in action less than 48 hours from now, as they host the United States Merchant Marine Academy on September 22nd at 7 p.m.
