PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team suffered defeat Wednesday evening, falling to the United States Merchant Marine Academy by the score of 6-0.
The game marked the opening of Skyline Conference action for the hosts, while also serving as the team's home opener. With the loss, the Panthers now sit at 1-2 overall. As for the Mariners of USMMA, the squad moved to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in Skyline action.
While the final score might have been decisive in Merchant Marine's favor, the contest started off with back-and-forth action. After some early corner kicks led to nothing for the guests, Purchase produced a pair of shots in the 13th and 14th minutes that went just high and forced a save.
After that though, Merchant Marine began to take over. The Mariners first found the back of the net in 24th minute, when Abram Ehrhorn (SR/Papillion, NE) slipped one past Purchase's keeper. Less than a minute later, Ehrhorn doubled the guests' advantage with his second of the night.
The score remained 2-0 over the next 20 minutes, as the sides entered the halftime break. However, once the second half started, it was all USMMA. The guests managed four goals over the 45-minute frame, including one just 38 seconds in to cruise to the victory.
On the night, Purchase was outshot 21-6 overall and produced just one corner kick. Individually,
Travis Stella (FR/Waterbury, NY) finished with five saves, while
Juan Arboleda (SR/New Rochelle, NY) produced two shots (one on goal).Â
Up next for the Panthers is a non-conference home game against Hunter College on September 25th. Kick-off for that game is set for 2:30 p.m. and you can follow along here.Â
