PURCHASE, N.Y. - 31 seconds.
That's all the time the Purchase College men's soccer team needed to earn a rousing overtime victory over Hunter College Saturday afternoon, as senior
Jackson Stenborg (Brooklyn, NY) provided the winning strike.
Stenborg converted the chance from about 20-yards out, after slipping his shot past Hunter's keeper from the right side of the field. Initially, his attempt bounced off the inside of the bottom left post before ricocheting into the back of the net.Â
The senior then celebrated like a mad-man following the goal, getting swarmed by his Panther teammates along the way. The mood was much different for the Hawks of Hunter College though, as the guests (0-6) left the field deflated after battling all game only to come up empty-handed.
Before all the craziness of the overtime period began, the two sides played an even 90-minutes.
Purchase (2-2) struck first on the day, as
Marlon Matute (FR/Staten Island, NY) headed-in a gorgeous cross from
Keven Garcia (FR/Port Chester, NY) in the 15th minute. The score remained 1-0 until the 34th minute, as the Hawks scored their first of the game.Â
The two sides continued the even matchup into halftime tied at 1-1, before an early second-half strike gave the guests the lead in the 50th minute.
Over the next 15 minutes, the Panthers played with more urgency as they trailed for the first time all day. Finally, in the 65th minute, the hosts got some good luck when a Hunter defender was called for a handball in the box to give Purchase a penalty chance.
From there, Garcia stepped up and calmly slotting in the goal, tying things up at 2-2. Over the final 25 minutes of regulation, both sides created sparks offensively but weren't able to ignite them into any serious chances.
Luckily, that all changed in overtime when Stenborg scored on Purchase's first opportunity down the field.
On the day, the Panthers outshot Hunter, 16-12 overall and 10-3 on goal. As a result,
Travis Stella (FR/Waterbury, NY) tallied just one save in the win, while Antony Simos (JR/Valley Stream, NY) collected seven saves.
Up next for the men's soccer team is a return to Skyline Conference action, as the team travels to St. Joseph's College-Long Island on September 28th. Kick-off for that match is set for 7:00 p.m. and you can follow it here.Â
