PURCHASE, N.Y. – The City College of New York managed to escape Purchase with a 3-1 victory Friday night.
The visiting Beavers fended off the Panthers in a very competitive match that was highlighted by long rallies and both teams holding serve for stretches. CCNY prevailed, earning their first win of the season by set scores of 25-17, 20-25, 25-13 and 25-23.
The non-conference loss drops Purchase to 0-4 on the season, while the Beavers advance to 1-5 overall.
Junior middle blocker
Samantha Fasce (Yorktown Heights, NY) led the Panthers with her first collegiate double-double, collecting 11 kills and 11 digs. She finished with a notable .214 hitting percentage and a team-high 12 points.
Rookie standout
Lilith Bastek-Ochoa (FR/Sag Harbor, NY) came off the bench to record 11 points for the Panthers. The Purchase newcomer netted 10 kills, eight digs and a team-best .348 attacking percentage.
Senior setter
Karina Medina (Brooklyn, NY) backed a match-high 26 assists to go along with five digs and four kills.
Pamella Gonzalez (JR/Bronx, NY) and senior libero
Skyla Schoppmeyer (Oakdale, NY) led the defense with a combined 23 digs, while also producing a notable nine combined service aces.
After dropping the opening set 25-17, the Panthers bounced back to take the win in game two, 25-20. Purchase used a four-point rally to break free of a 16-16 tie and then outscored CCNY, 5-3, to clinch the win. A pair of kills by Medina and a match-closing attack from Schoppmeyer fueled the Panthers' sprint to the finish line.
CCNY fired back in the third set, jumping out to an early 11-5 lead and forcing a PC timeout. The Beaver offense continued to ignite, however, tallying nine kills to close the stanza out in front, 25-13.
The fourth set opened with both teams exchanging scores. Following a 7-7 tie, CCNY committed back-to-back attacking errors to push Purchase ahead 9-7. The lead would exchange hands over the next several plays before a pair of Gonzalez service aces gave Purchase an 18-15 advantage.
The Beavers answered back with two aces of their own from Nadia Campoverde, but Bastek-Ochoa and
Leah Bickley (SR/San Francisco, CA) kept things alive for Purchase with a kill and an ace, respectively. The home team's advantage quickly dwindled, however, as CCNY's Natalia Abreu recorded back-to-back kills to make it 24-23 in favor of the visitors. Viviana Alatorre netted the set-winning point on a service ace, securing the 3-1 non-conference victory.
Purchase looks to bounce back from Friday's upset when the team returns to action again tomorrow. The Panthers will take on Baruch College for a non-conference matchup slated for 12 p.m.
