Panthers Thwarted at St. Joseph's-LI in Double OT

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - After emerging as overtime victors during its last contest, the Purchase College men's soccer team felt the sting of defeat Tuesday evening, falling to St. Joseph's College-Long Island by the score of 2-1 in double overtime.

The result came after nearly 105-minutes of action between the two Skyline Conference foes, when Justin Gracia (SO/Bay Shore, NY) slotted in a loose-ball in front of goal.

The chance was made possible for Gracia after a 50-50 ball near the Purchase goal came to rest at his feet, following a collusion between Purchase's keeper, Travis Stella (FR/Waterbury, NY), a Purchase defender and a St. Joseph's forward.

As the bodies collided, Stella was unable to get a full grip on the ball and it squirted out back into play, where Gracia subsequently knocked it in.

Despite the loss, the Panthers played well on the night.

In fact, it was the guests who scored first thanks to an own goal from the Golden Eagles in the 23rd minute. The lead was short lived, however, as the hosts tied the contest just two minutes later on a goal from Sebastiano Bartolotta (FR/Lindenhurst, NY).

From there, the two sides remained even for the next 80 minutes until the double-overtime strike decided the match. In the end, St. Joseph's-Long Island outshot Purchase, 19-13 overall and 11-9 on goal, while Purchase earned more corner kicks, 7-6.

The contest was also extremely physical with 38 fouls between the two sides, though no cards were shown. In goal, Stella tallied nine saves for the guests.

With the result, the Panthers dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the Skyline. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles now sit at 2-2-1 and 1-1-1 respectively.

Up next for Purchase is more Skyline action, as the team travels down the road to face Manhattanville College this weekend. That match is scheduled for October 2nd at 4 p.m. and you can follow it here.
