Men's Basketball Downs Old Westbury, 94-81

Panthers move to an even .500 in Skyline action

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Purchase College men's basketball bounced back from Thursday's loss in a big way.

The Panthers, in a road game against the SUNY Old Westbury Panthers, produced some of the program's season-best offensive numbers en route to a 94-81 Skyline victory Saturday afternoon.

With Old Westbury's gymnasium currently operating as a COVID-19 testing site, the Panther showdown was played at Farmingdale State.

Senior standout Malcolm Hansford-Whyte (Queens, NY) led Purchase with 23 points, connecting on 7-of-14 from the field and 7-of-10 from the charity stripe. The Panther guard and this week's honor roll winner for Skyline Player of the Week netted 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and pulled down six rebounds and a pair of steals.

Justin Mason (FR/Staten Island, NY), Jordan Knochen (SR/Maybrook, NY), Matthew Phillips (FR/Bronx, NY) and Elijah Holmes (SO/Brooklyn, NY) also produced double figures, combining for 57 of Purchase's 94 points. Mason finished with 18 points, while Knochen tallied 17 and a game-high four assists. Phillips came off the bench to tally another 12 points and lead all defensive players with nine boards over just 10 minutes of action. Holmes rounded out the top Panther performers with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Purchase broke the game's scoring ice on a free throw from Terrence Mason (JR/Greenburgh, NY) but Old Westbury answered with a 3-point bucket from Charles Wingate.

After a Hansford-Whyte jumper tied the game at 3-3, Wingate netted another triple to push the hosts back out in front. The narrow lead was quickly erased, however, as Purchase rallied with six unanswered points to take a 9-6 advantage.

The visiting Panthers would carry that lead for the remainder of the game.

Purchase grew its 3-point halftime advantage (39-36) to as many as 27 points (70-52) in the second stanza.

Hansford-Whyte recorded an impressive 19 points over the final 20 minutes, while Knochen chipped in with 11 points. The duo combined for more than 50% of Purchase's tallies in the second half.

A Phillips free throw with six seconds on the clock capped the scoring for the game and delivered a 94-81 victory for Purchase.

The Panthers moved to 3-10 overall and an even .500 (3-3) in Skyline play following Saturday's triumph. In defeat, Old Westbury dropped to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the league.

Purchase will continue its road slate on Monday when the team takes a short trip to neighboring Skyline foe Manhattanville College. Tip-off against the Valiants is set for 6 p.m.
