PURCHASE, N.Y. –
Malcolm Hansford-Whyte shot a notable 26 points for Purchase in a hard-fought 75-62 loss to neighboring Skyline Conference foe Manhattanville College Monday night at the Kennedy Gymnasium.
Hansford-Whyte (SR/Queens, NY) led all scorers with his impressive shooting, connecting on 9-of-16 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. He netted a trio from beyond the arc, to go along with seven boards, two assists and one steal.
Terrence Mason (JR/Greenburgh, NY) also produced significant numbers for the Panther lineup. The junior guard recorded 14 points and 13 rebounds en route to his second double-double of the season.
Purchase (3-11, 3-4 SKY) jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open up the game. Hansford-Whyte struck first with a triple followed by a Mason layup.
The Panther advantage was quickly erased, however, as Manhattanville (7-6, 4-2 SKY) rallied with a 12-3 run over the next four minutes. The Valiants were able to pull ahead 12-8 at 16:40, courtesy of a Mike Granda jumper. The team would close the remainder of the half on 53 percent shooting from the field to lead 40-27 at the break.
For every rally the Panthers attempted in the second half, Manhattanville would respond with a run of their own. Purchase would trail by at least eight points for the remainder of the stanza. Despite a 35-point performance, including 16 points from Hansford-Whyte, the Panthers closed the game in defeat, 75-62.
Purchase will continue its road slate on Wednesday as the Panthers head to Patchogue, NY to take on St. Joseph's College (LI). The Skyline matchup is slated for 5:30 p.m.
