Panthers Outpace Sarah Lawrence, 2-1

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team rallied from an early deficit Saturday night to best Sarah Lawrence College, 2-1, for its first Skyline Conference win of the year.

With the result, the Panthers moved to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference. For the Gryphons, they fell to 5-5-1 and 1-3-1, respectively.

The victory turned out to be a hard-fought affair for the guests, as Purchase was forced to overcome a lead early thanks to a 15th-minute goal by Sarah Lawrence.

The Panthers continued to trail until the 34th minute, when Marlon Matute (SO/Staten Island, NY) slotted a shot past the Sarah Lawrence keeper off a feed from Colman Cassidy (SR/Brooklyn, NY).

From there, the two sides remained level at 1-1 into the midway stoppage.

Following the break, each side started slowly before Purchase was gifted a golden opportunity with a penalty kick chance in the 58th minute. The Panthers didn't squander it, as Ethan Dillon (SR/Poughkeepsie, NY) stepped up and buried the chance.

Over the final third of the contest, the Gryphons' offense poked and prodded Purchase to the tune of nine shots, but weren't able to break through.

For the Panthers, Travis Stella (SO/Waterbury, NY) rose to the challenge in goal and finished with eight saves in the win.

On offense, Matute produced three shots, while Cassidy and Dillon each tallied a pair of chances apiece.

Up next for the men's soccer team is a non-conference home matchup against Medgar Evers College on October 3rd. That contest is set to begin at 7 p.m. and you can follow it here.
