PURCHASE, N.Y. – Purchase College sophomore
Marlon Matute posted a trio of goals, leading the Panthers to a 3-0 sweep over Medgar Evers College at home on Monday night.
With the non-conference win, Purchase advanced to an even .500 at 5-5 overall. Medgar Evers dropped to 0-10 on the season.
Matute (Staten Island, NY) snapped a scoreless start to the game with a stellar header in the 19th minute. Senior midfielder
Ethan Dillon (Lagrange, NY) played a diagonal long ball from 30 yards out to earn the assist.
At halftime, Purchase held a narrow 1-0 edge over the visitors.
Matute picked up his second tally in the 72nd minute after collecting a loose ball inside the 18-yard box. He slotted a high shot to the right side of the net to give PC a 2-0 advantage.
The standout forward finished off the hat trick just two minutes later, taking a deflection off Cougar netminder Louis Caiola and one-timing it into the upper net. Monday's performance marked the first hat trick in Matute's Panther career. He currently leads the team in goals (8) and points (16).
The Panther back line also put together a notable performance as junior goalkeeper
Mario Olmedo (East Elmhurst, NY) (2-1) needed to make just three saves to earn the shutout—his second clean sheet of the season.
For Medgar Evers, Caiola (0-10) finished with eight saves over the 90 minutes.
Purchase returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 5) for a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference matchup at Maritime College.
