Conte's Late Strike Lifts Purchase at Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - Leo Conte saved his best for last Wednesday night, scoring the game-winning goal in the 88th minute, to the lift the Purchase College men's soccer team to a victory at Maritime College, 2-1.

Conte's (JR/New York, NY) winning strike came during a moment of brilliance between him and Marlon Matute (SO/Staten Island, NY), as the sophomore sent a diagonal cross into the box, where Conte was waiting to bury it.

After the goal, Conte ran toward the corner flag to celebrate and was mobbed by his teammates. While the team celebrated momentarily, the Panthers knew they still had work to do to seal the win.

Luckily, they did just that over the final minutes, holding Maritime to just one shot the rest of the way.

It was a total team win for Purchase, as it had to rally to beat the hosts after falling behind early.

In just the fourth minute, the Privateers snuck one past Purchase keeper Mario Olmedo (JR/East Elmhurst, NY) to edge ahead, 1-0.

From there, the two sides failed to capitalize on anymore chances in the half and entered the midway break with the same score.

Following halftime, it was actually Conte that tied things up the Panthers with his first goal of the day. The strike came in the 58th minute, when he blasted a free kick into the back of the net, tying things at 1-1.

Over the next 30 minutes, the two sides each probed for a chance, before Purchase finally earned it in the 88th with Conte's second of the night.

For the game, the Panthers only recorded two shots on goal, but made the most of each chance. Overall, Maritime outshot PC, 19-14.

In goal, Olmedo finished with five saves and the win. The victory was a crucial one for Purchase, as the team enters the heart of Skyline Conference action.

With the result, the Panthers now sit at 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the league. For the Privateers, they fell to 1-8-2 and 0-5-1, respectively.

Up next for Purchase is a home matchup with Mount Saint Mary College on October 8th at noon. You can follow along right here.
