PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Purchase College men's soccer team lost a Skyline Conference matchup Saturday afternoon, falling at home to Mount Saint Mary College by the score of 4-0.
With the result, the Panthers dropped to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference. Purchase had entered the contest on a three-game winning steak. For the Knights, they improved to 6-4-2 and 4-1-1, respectively.Â
Despite the final score, the two sides actually played quite a close contest to begin the day.
During the opening 40 minutes, each side created chances on offense, but both keepers,
Travis Stella (SO/Waterbury, NY) for Purchase and Caesar Martinez (SO/Lake Katrine, NY) for Mount St. Mary, stood tall in goal.
It wasn't until the 43rd minute that a team finally broke through, as the Knights slipped one past Stella off a rebounded shot that first hit the crossbar.
The goal was ultimately the difference in the matchup, both in terms of the score and momentum, as the guests entered the halftime break elated, while the Panthers were left discouraged.
For Purchase, the hosts came out with some life to begin the second half to the tune of three great chances. Unfortunately, Martinez was a wizard in goal and stopped them all.
While the Panthers were unable to capitalize on their chances, the Knights did not suffer the same fate and tallied three more goals during the final third of the match to prevail, 4-0.
In total, Mount St. Mary finished with more overall shots (20-17), while Purchase tallied more shots on goal (10-9).
Stella collected five saves in the loss, while
Marlon Matute (SO/Staten Island, NY) andÂ
Colman Cassidy (SR/Brooklyn, NY) tallied five and four shots, respectively.
Up next for the Panthers is more Skyline Conference action, as the team travels to SUNY Old Westbury on October 11th at 6 p.m. You can follow along here.Â
