FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - For the first time in nearly nine years, the Purchase College men's soccer team emerged victorious over SUNY Old Westbury, outlasting its foe by the score of 3-2 Tuesday night.
Entering tonight, Purchase's last win against the green and white came back on October 24, 2013, via a 3-0 result at home.
Since then, the orange and blue have gone 0-4-3 over the last seven meetings.
However, that all changed for the Panthers on Tuesday, as they exploded out of the gate to the tune of three first-half goals.Â
Their first of the night was the contest's opening goal, as
Colman Cassidy (SR/Brooklyn, NY) buried a diving header off a
Leo Conte (JR/New York, NY) free kick in the 16th minute.Â
12 minutes later, Purchase doubled its total when
Marlon Matute (SO/Staten Island, NY) found the back of the net via a feed from Cassidy.
Old Westbury then responded with a goal in the 37th to make it 2-1, before
Liam George (SO/Brooklyn, NY)Â pushed the lead to 3-1 with his strike in the 40th minute.
The 3-1 advantage carried to halftime and well into the second half, as Purchase continued to control the contest.Â
It wasn't until the 74th minute that Old Westbury created some trouble for the Panthers, as the hosts scored once more to cut the deficit to 3-2.
However, Purchase wasn't going to be denied on the night.
Over the final 16 minutes, the guests' defense locked in and held Old Westbury to no shots the rest of the way to seal the game.
With the win, the orange and blue moved to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in the Skyline Conference. For the green and white, they fell to 1-8-2 and 0-5-2, respectively.
Up next for the men's soccer team is more Skyline action, as the team travels back to Long Island for a matchup with Farmingdale State College.
That game is set for October 15th at 2:30 p.m. and you can follow along here.Â
