PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Purchase College men's soccer team celebrated five standouts on Senior Night Wednesday at home under the lights.
The festivities provided a nice backdrop for an exciting game that [unfortunately for the Panthers] ended in favor of the visiting Bears of St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn), 3-2.
Prior to the game, seniors
Colman Cassidy (Brooklyn, NY),
Devonte Dawson (SR/Yonkers, NY),
Nick Prata (SR/Anaheim, CA),
Ethan Dillon (Lagrange, NY) and
Ethan Bautista (Simsbury, CT) were individually recognized for their accomplishments both on and off the field.
Trailing 2-0 to open the game, Purchase clawed back to even the score at 2-apiece. Panther sophomore
Marlon Matute (Staten Island, NY) netted back-to-back goals on assists from
Liam George (SO/Brooklyn, NY) and Prata in the 27th and 63rd minutes, respectively.
Behind the forward's pair of goals, Purchase would continue to produce scoring opportunities. However, the visitors fired back with chances of their own, eventually finding success in the 72nd minute off the right foot of Victor Naci.
It would prove to be the difference. The sophomore forward netted the unassisted game-winner from the top of the 18-yard box, firing to the far post and just out of reach from PC goalie
Travis Stella (SO/Waterbury, NY).
Nonetheless, the Panthers would not go quietly, flashing some strong efforts to knot the game, including a missed Matute shot from six yards out and a Dawson free kick that was scooped up by SJU netminder Leonel Bravo.
Bravo recorded six saves, including five in the second half to preserve the 3-2 win.
Despite being tagged with Wednesday's loss, Stella (2-6) finished with seven saves over the 90 minutes.
St. Joe's held an 18-12 advantage in shots (10-8 on goal) and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Senior Night matchup concluded Purchase's 2022 regular season home slate. The Panthers will take to the road for their final two contests—both against Skyline opponents—starting with Mount Saint Vincent on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. and ending with a trip to Kings Point, N.Y. on Oct. 25 to take on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at 7 p.m.
