Plagued with Injuries, Panthers Fall to SLC

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Purchase College dropped to an even .500 on the season following its 8-0 loss to undefeated Skyline rival Sarah Lawrence College Saturday afternoon.

Still battling a slew of injuries from their Oct. 5 game, the host Panthers (5-5, 2-4 Skyline) stepped onto the pitch Saturday without key players in the lineup. Every eligible and non-injured player saw the field, and the liberal use of reserves meant playing in different combinations and positions.

"The score didn't reflect the quality of play," added head coach Nick Malvai

The Gryphons (8-3-1, 5-0 Skyline) came out firing from the first whistle, totaling five shots (2 on goal) in the opening 20 minutes. Rookie netminder Carolyn Hough (FR/Massapequa, NY) collected the pair of saves in a notable start for Purchase.

Sarah Lawrence finally broke through at 20:09, as Cora Colvin sent a through ball to Hannah Chaffin inside the 18-yard box for the game-winner. Chaffin found net again in the 29th minute, with the assist coming from teammate Viktoria Balbin. Ten minutes later, Emma Floyd collected a pass from Rosy Jackson to push the Gryphon advantage to 3-0.

The Gryphons reeled off another 17 shots in the second half—striking net on five of them en route to the 8-0 victory. Chaffin scored another pair during the final 45 to bring her game total to a team-leading four goals.

Purchase was limited to just one shot over the 90 minutes of play.

Playing just shy of 52 minutes, Hough (2-4) finished with seven saves and five goals against in the loss. Haley Cascio (SR/Deer Park, NY) tallied four saves and three against over the final 38 minutes.

The Panthers look to bounce back from Saturday's loss as they shift their focus to the upcoming Oct. 12 game against Skyline foe Farmingdale State. Purchase will play host to the Rams under the lights at 7:15 p.m.
