PURCHASE, N.Y. — Purchase College women's tennis dropped a Skyline Conference match, 8-1, to league powerhouse Farmingdale State at home on Sunday.
The matchup—rescheduled from Oct. 2 due to weather—was the Panthers' return to league action after more than weeks of non-conference matches. In defeat, Purchase moved at an even .500 in both overall (4-4) and Skyline (1-1) records.
The visiting Rams (7-4, 3-0 Skyline) jumped out to a 3-0 lead following doubles play. Lien Collins and Mackenzie Gisler were first to score, posting an 8-3 win at the No. 2 spot over Purchase's Olivia Menchell (SO/Los Angeles, CA) and Elaina Coppola (JR/White Plains, NY).
First and third doubles were both evenly matched throughout. Panther seniors Nikita Kordzielewska (SR/Stepnica, Poland) and Sophia Cenatiempo (Woodbury, CT) put forth a notable effort at the top flight but came up short in the end, 8-5, before rookies Sierra Blanco (FR/New York, NY) and Novalie Nguyen (FR/Rochester, NY) were edged out from an early lead to fall 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, Farmingdale's Mikayla Demario and Collins posted wins at the sixth and second positions, respectively, to clinch the match for the visitors.
Kordzielewska picked up the lone win of the afternoon for Purchase. The standout Panther battled Skyline elite player Anastasia Hoffman for a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 victory at No. 1 singles. With the win, Kordzielewska remains undefeated in singles, 2-0, against conference opponents.
PC will return to its home court this Tuesday at 3 p.m. to take on neighboring Skyline rival Manhattanville College.
